UPDATE!!!

16v head-studs are en route!

Also scored an intercooler from ryan’s, its good to have spare performance parts lying around haha

Its about 22 or 24” core length, about 8” high and 3.5” thick, yes more overkill, but its mostly so im ready for a big turbo. We welded in an additional support bar to hang the IC from in the center support, I will add to this to mount my oil cooler most likely. Pics!

I have since received a full set of b3 90q wheel bearings, and while the knuckles and hubs are apart im getting them powder coated in low gloss black mostly for durability. They will get coated and reassembled and installed onto the car.

I gots me another urS4 o1e to put in ( jsut need to whip up some custom mounts) , linkage is done from when I was 7a/o1e’ing the car, and I’ve acquired b3 80 front ball joints to use in my b2 c-arms and 2 piece b3 knuckles and uprights. I also sourced a set of b3 90q 20v springs and fresh 034 street strut mounts.

So with the above suspension setup I will be able to use off the shelf b3 90q axles, SWEET!!

In my small bit of spare time this winter I was able to fabricate up a nice oil catch can out of a piece of 3.5” straight and a AC drier can. It has qty. 2, 10AN inlets, one for VC and one for the crankcase, also a ¾” K&N breather filter for it as well, just need to get it mounted up, here’s some assembly pics, ill find the finished pic soon. there is a 1/4" npt drain petcock, not pictured to be installed as well

EDIT: Radiator mounting and boost piping have changed, see 3 pages fwd

Ok update time, now where was I? I did too much without an update so ill try to remember it all.

Ok so I cant seem to find a bunch of my pics ( as usual) but I have some and even better, a list of pics that I need to take and upload, so they will come don’t worry. Sooo much has been done its hard to know where to start. So when we were mocking things up the first few times around and making engine mounts and whatnot, I swear we had room for a stock 4kq radiator, well kinda not really.

So I set about making some more space for the stock side mount radiator. I cut and inch and a half into the frame rail and used some large steel plates to reinforce the area. And I started cutting and modifying the stock shroud as well. I made intercooler piping and had all the correct angled silicone couplers. The intercooler was mounted on a cross bar behind the main unibody center support. (see in some later pics) And a light bar off the ic mount/ xbar, that’s removable as well The plumbing on the external water pump was becoming a little bit of a pain, but nothing a few custom creative cooling hose bends couldn’t fix. A looming obstacle was the mounting of the alternator on the serpentine belt system. On the ABA blocks the waterpump is external and tensioned via the p/s pump on the single vbelt on the front of the crank pulley. So I had the front end mostly together, but constantly tinkering with it and not quite happy the way the radiator was going to work. I had a long term goal of going front mount radiator anyway but it seemed easier at first to keep some of the components in the stock locations etc.

but then there was the stock aba accessories. I had always wanted to run an abz alternator, a bit smaller and 150A, but the offset is a ways off. I found reman ABA alternators that are 120A, that should do fine even with all the lights up front. And it mounts on the ABA serp tensioner bracket. But theres no way that would fit with the side mount radiator. Im starting to get a little frustrated at this point. So in talking to my friend jim, he has a b3 16v fwd radiator at the shop. I picked it up and brought it home to test fit, that’s when the whole center support was cut from the chassis, I was going to make a front mount radiator and intercooler support!!

Going front mount radiator gives me a bit more work to do as I need to make a shroud and a third center support,( yes, third, it sucks building them on a not-so-straight chassis) and remount the intercooler and extend/re-angle my boost piping. By doing front mount I can now run the oem brackets for serpentine tensioner and ABA alternator, all of which fits with my intake manifold. Building perfect accessory brackets is much more difficult than making a shroud and more boost piping. So I took the plunge, its not nearly finished, its in its third version with more to come. A tweaked chassis makes it a lot more difficult and time consuming, on to some pics!!!

MOAR!! Ok so the b3 16v fwd radiator is in a temp mounting location. It has all of the inlets and outlets on the driver side of the engine bay which is very convenient to the way the engine is laid out with regards to the cooling system. And with no radiator in the oem location there is a ton of space for me to mount my catch can and to have all my plumbing to through that area and keep things easy to work on.

The intercooler will move a bit farther forward, as the center support is always under revision. Did I mention working on a chassis with a replaced front frame rail that is tweaked, well it SUCKS, the only pain in the butt part of this whole build has been trying to keep and make things square up front when one side of the car is ½” shorter than the other, atleast the very front of it, drives fine.

The intake manifold will be modified a bit more, I want a little bit more clearance for the shroud and the tb cable alignment will be improved as I move the throttle body for more clearance.

The b3 80 8v fwd radiators are still available at autohausaz for just $116 which is nice as ill prob pickup a spare or two

More updatage

Neither the ABA or 9A motors ever came turbocharged so I had some oil and water plumbing to figure out, oh ya and this motor is transverse in 98% of the cars it came in, so I had my work cut out for me. I am running a k24 turbo with both oil and water cooling. It’s a pretty close fit to the hood so I have the chra about 10 degrees from plumb, not optimal but it gives me better clearances on my oil and water lines. The water feed is coming off the “water manifold” that looks similar to the 7a coolant bung on the head. I had initially made the feed forward facing but it doesn’t route nearly as clean, so we made another and it now goes around the back of the head.
Image
Image

For the water outlet, I used a piece of b4 SS fuel line I think it is, and welded on a AN6 male fitting on the end, the flare on the end of the adapter matches the drain fitting flare perfectly and give a lot more room to adjust the hoses.
Image
Image
Image
Image
I made a small oil feed flange out of some spare stock and tapped it to 1/8” NPT, a little ghetto but itll work fine.

More updates,

Intake manifold is almost finished, we got the throttle body cable stop and pulley mounted. The alignment isn’t perfect where the cable comes off the tb pulley, but that will be near perfect once I move the plenum feed rearward just a little bit.
Image
Image

Also I’m using this throttle body and tps as I had it from my red 3b car. I swapped it off of that car is the TB cable holder on the TB cam, the plastic was broken and needed repair. So I used a piece of 3/16 steel and drilled a hole and put in a slot with a cutting disc. I took the TB cam off the TB and wrapped in a wet rag, a few quick low voltage zaps and it was attached to the cam, yea scary welding as its got a bunch of bonded plastic to it. So I did the few tacks with time in between. Once it cooled I put it in the vice and used vice grips on the other side and its pleeeenty strong enough for a TB cable, works for me. Ill get a finished pic when I'm back out in the garage.
Image

I got a rebuilt head from Ryan, 16v with 3 angle grind job, tt street cams and light port cleaning. I’m sure he’ll chime in with some more info. He also hooked me up with a reringed bottom end, I've got my ARP studs and MLS head gasket and spacer and I’m ready to tighten things down!!1 wooohooo

UPDATE!!!!

Ok so I had my radiator in the front and in its final position. So I had to make a shroud. I wanted to use an aftermarket fan solution and pretty much the only way to put everything right where I wanted was to make my own. The fan that I selected is the same one I am using on my coupe Quattro project. It fits very well. Its also nice that if I were to ever need a fan I could swap them between my cars.

The fan is sold by Be-Cool, but is made by Spal. Its 12” wide and 2.5” deep, and flows 1230 cfm. A nice unit for the price, I just need to swap the connector and I’m good to go.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BCI-75080/

I ended up making the shroud out of two smaller pieces I had laying around, and joining them with two small spare broken sections. The fan comes to the very edge of the shroud for about 3”(fan has small flat edges in opposing spots), so I would have had to remove most of that material anyway. Its pretty flush but I will probably add some thin weather striping for good measure.

The fan is also offset for better pulley and throttle body clearance.

I also remounted the intercooler, as I had moved the radiator forward a bit more.

Update! Ok, got some more done.

First, I want to thank Haydn for use of the brake, (even though I broke it last time, sorry again) without that, I would have had a much more ragged looking setup.

When we made the intake manifold the plan was still side radiator. Now that has obviously changed. I didn’t want to rework the whole thing so I cut the inlet to the plenum and gave it a bit more aggressive angle for a lot more clearance behind the radiator shroud. Previously the throttle cable had been coming out of the tb cam at a slight angle and this actually straightened it right out.

I also got a hold of an ABA breather block-off plate and got it tapped for ½” NPT. A lot of people block it off at the block and run just a head breather with a 16v conversion, but I opted to keep the block breather in addition to running a head breather port, cant hurt.

It’s nice, the plate has the factory o-ring groove machined into it, now I just need a freeze plug for the other side. This piece deletes the huge bulky black plastic piece on the side of the block. Ill get some installed pictures soon.
Image

edit: changed setup see a few pages ahead
And here’s a quick pic of the 4kq p/s pump I’m mounting it as a tensioner for the mk3 aba water pump. The factory p/s pump to rack line fits nicely I just need a ~6” longer reservoir to pump line.
