Julian's '91 200 20vt
Re: Julian's '91 200 20vt
I probably should have replied sooner, but I'm not so sure if the traditional way of reading plugs works on the tri ground strap plugs. The bend is in a different place along the arc length of the strap. Know what I mean? I do think it's close though.
There isn't much else to tell from those plugs. What is your fueling like at wot? Porcelain looks very white, jut that could just be from lack of use.

Theres also the matter of leaving my meth controller at its lowest output and the same mixture but adjusting fueling lower via the fuel VE table. I don't think that's wrong though?

My brother's m3 is the featured car at a local euro car show. I brought my car along last minute and it's got 10 months of dirt and grime on it lol. I don't really care

Crazy part is it was about 60% new/old porsches and even the guy that planned the event walked up and said my car was awesome (even before he saw the m3 lol). He did think it was an 88 5k though

Everybody was really old and only my brother and I and a guy with a supercharged v8 were revving or even doing anything besides playing scratch-offs! My brother was demonstrating the exhaust cutout he just wired in and I did launch control on the way out. I didn't do a burnout or anything though. Just making a bunch of obnoxious turbo and engine noises

The man who invented the trash compactor truck lives here too. Brought his 1950s Bentley. He didn't see me but sure heard me from behind a car. As I left I waved to him as he was exclaiming "WHOA WHOA WHOA!" I bet he thought u was gonna burnout and crash into a beautiful porsche lol.
I added another half degree of timing in a few places and I've got to say, these power trains are bulletproof! I have only done 2 launch-controlled burnouts in gravel but this engine is REALLY beating up my car! Hauls ass in no uncertain terms
I'd say it's as quick as I'll really ever require... for another 10 or less days

Oh, you know... quicker
He rode with me and his words were "I think your car is faster than mine. At least it puts me back in my seat harder." That made my day. I actually keep track of how his car drives pretty closely since I ride with him alot. I'd say I have about 30 ft-lbs on him and his car is chipped and has a ram air intake. The shop advertised it at approx. 400 hp today but he and I both know it's more like 360 to 370 hp lol. I'm quicker in a straight line with my stock suspension. Around a corner might be challenging.
Each registered car was entered into a raffle for car stuff and the shop that sponsored him (Rennsport Tuning) had a bag of detailing stuff and wouldn't you know my brother won it hah. I won't a porsche beer glass. So out of 30 or 40 cars we both won 1 of 12 items. It was rigged

Re: Julian's '91 200 20vt
Lol yes people were concerned when they heard me showing what was lurking under the hood. It's amusing. This lady there loved the car. She thinks it's funny that the Germans make avant and refuse to call them station wagons at the dealeeships. She recalled having an argument about it with an audi salesman actually. I told her the funny thing was this big dirty nasty looking car made as much power as the other cars there and she and her husband found that hilarious.
The guy with the bodyshop behind Rennsport that fixed his flaking rim for the show has an E36! He is knocking $50 off the repaint price in trade for the e46's rear sway bar. It got replaced with an h&r bar wrapped in $100 bills lol. The plan is to try installing the stock s/b on his e36. I hope it works out for him... we have no idea on the matter.
So you can spank the e36 eh? That's pretty cool! You're still stock to my recollection, save for cams? I'll have to check into the e36. Must not have the same I6 with 333hp stock. If you got a tune, sorry I didn't catch it. Sometimes I get enveloped in addition to my thread and can miss things elsewhere on the site :(
The brakes.. absolutely, without argument:
INSUFFICIENT lol
They work for now with the new ceramic pads I put on. I'm not going to crash into any school busses anytime soon. I'm really quite safe on the road. No racing, signals, obey traffic code concerning the 4 sec rule for following and leave a full car length in front at lights. Cops ain't got SH!T on me! Bahaha! Ya so my days of skidding to a stop before rear-ending someone are behind me.
Next stop: possibly the apikol c4 short shift upgrade (if it's not hype and fits ok) and
993 tt calipers and 330mm rotors up front similar to what's seen here
http://www.movitcars.com/htm/audv8.htm
On the Apikol deal, anyone know about it. Could I essentially achieve the same with a new $15 bushing?
Oh and Dave, absol-lutely! Turbo sounds amazing. Still scares people lol. I went from no power above 70 F ambient (cooler equated to good power only b/t 2500 and 4500 rom) to gobs of boost until redline. Impressed my brothers mechanic at the show with the p-car hybrid details. All he basically wrenches on are porsches.

Re: Julian's '91 200 20vt
I don't think this is really related to your oscillation issue, but it probably doesn't help... look at your ref dc table and clean that up. It goes from ~45 to ~75 dc within one cell. That isn't helpful for boost control. You might want to smooth it out.
Looking more closely at your PID tuning, I can see the problem. It is DEFINITELY because of the "Apply max DC until" setting. It is currently set at -30 kPa. That means it will apply max duty cycle to the boost valve until boost is 30 kPa below the target boost (in this case 270 kPa). If you look at the log, this is exactly where the boost duty cycle drops off and your PID tune starts to kick in AND where your first oscillation is. Then, later where the boost duty cycle picks back up in value, its not because your PID is doing something. It is because your refDC table is requesting that value!
Your PID tune is essentially doing nothing lol. It is, for the most part, applying your base ref DC values. This is because your PID values are so small, they are essentially zero. You need to get rid of this 100% bs for a while and get your PID settings on point. Then you should fine tune with these auxiliary settings.

Alright, I've met you half way lol (or is it a 1/3rd of the way close?? 60% closer?). I reduced that 100% until bs to -90 kpa
Some tweaks to my table and here is the first guess's log and what changes I made according to the data.
I also increased I to 10 haha. I say haha because apparently I'm showing my age when I type lol
Ill see how the new settings behave tomorrow.

Re: Julian's '91 200 20vt
To be honest man, I think you're focusing on that refDC table way too much. You're getting the results you want roughly, but you're kind of defeating the purpose of having PID at your fingertips. You can tune every single cell in the refDC table and turn PID off and get roughly the same result as you can with Just setting refDC to the same number across the board and letting the PID controller do the rest of the work. The latter method just takes less time.
Either way, it looks like you're pretty close to where you need to be for now. It's just that when the weather changes, your system will not be very robust because your PID controller still isn't doing almost anything. You have to give it more control authority. Do you see what I'm saying here? You're relying almost entirely on the refDC table and that's not robust.
I think tomorrow your new, higher ref DC values at the lower RPMs will make the car overboost and you'll hit boost cut. P, I, and D will probably have to be higher to counteract that. If it were me, I'd put like 60% all the way across the refDC table and tune the PID controller from there.
