Shop talk, ingenious homemade tools and gadgets!

Post by Vroman »

So I figure I will be delving into a pretty in depth build soon and want to have the right tools available to me almost all the time. I dont mind outsourcing stuff when it comes to machining and balancing type things, but what are some of your guys homemade/homebrew concoctions?

Im personally starting to look into a parts cleaner bin and I was thinking 1 1/2 55 gallon drums (the half on its side as the bin and the full standing up as the solvent drain/holder) with a water pump from a water-air intercooler setup to pump from the tank into the basin. Obviously it would have to be welded together with a piping setup for the drain but im pretty sure my friends electric welder could handle that because it will have virtually no major stess on the welds.

I also saw someone made a homemade sand blaster with plywood which is another one I am looking into for myself. Anyways, what are some things you guyw have come up with over the years?

Here is a couple pictures of a homemade tig torch cooler I'm in the process of building. its actually functioning now but need to finish the case for it and mount everything, I found a few versions of this online so figured it couldn't be too hard.
its built out of a fountain machine carbonator using a 740t oil cooler as a heat exchanger. i just used air disconnects on the lines with left hand thread adaptors, considering a miller coolmate cooler is 500+ this is going to work out perfect. I'll post finished pics in a week or so hopefully.
