Those TDI trans that I told you about will hold the power, they include wide gears. Now you face this situation where your talking about a custom built 01E which would cost as much as sourcing one of the 3.89 6spd TDI 01E's.

It's not the gears that are weak in terms of the teeth, it's the engagement portion of the gears that get rounded off and the shift collars (sliders). The TDI's are identical with different ratios making them no stronger (from what I understand). I've rebuilt my 01E twice now and I know them pretty well. I did also have to replace the input shaft due to a pitted first gear (on the shaft side).

Why would you want the taller final drive, which would also include having to swap out the rear end?

It is all physics, low hp/tq engines need short gears to compensate for there lack of power. Big hp/tq engines need tall gears to take full advantage of full power band. With a taller gear energy is built up through most of the rpm range before the gear is run out. Where as a shorter gear the big hp/tq engine would run out the gear before it achieves its maximum potential.

I am sure when you had the stock trans 1st and maybe 2nd gear were run out before you could get close to red line.

As for final drive, all ratios are compromises. Given the weight of the vehicle, the power to be produced, etc etc I would be beneficial for a taller final drive. Higher top speed, better gas mileage (big one with 1000chp).

The problem.with the 01e is the poor gear ratios. Ideally you would want a taller 1-2 and then shorter 3-5 with a tall 6th for the freeway. The 3.89 only solves two of these issues in tdi form. The tdis still have terrible 3-5 ratios. If you look at them, they are basically 5 speed ratios with a tall sixth. Some of the tdis have flexible main shafts and oil coolers, but other than that, 01e layout is pretty consistant across the board.

FYI, this is why I was so excited about the built trans from Scott, as I thought I was getting a shorter 3-4. In the end I just ended up with a standard wide five speed ratios. Piss off, I know. I added a sixth gear so I am pretty much geared like a tdi. This is not ideal for a high performance track car. No worries, though I will never buy anything from Scott again. A built tranmission with a complete rebuild should include new symcros imo

Most are running 01E boxes. But it is starting to come more and more straight cut boxes with custom ratio. Some companies in Norway are trying to make good deals on straight cut gears to use in the 01E box

I'm happy to report that the car is now safely in its new home (parents finally sold their house and are in new places now). Had to have AAA come and pick it up on the tow truck because of my lack of hydro assist on the brakes... and because of the 4" open dp in a quiet little town.

The car will be getting a little love in the next few weeks since I'll be home for the holidays. Mainly, the hydro assist will get hooked back up by way of a modified water manifold.

Next on the list of good things is that the crank sprokets are ready to be manufactured now. I just need to put a deposit on them and an initial run will be made. Since its the end of the semester, the deposit will be hard to come by if its just me so whoever is ready to have one of these on their car (although they will be untested for now) should contact me via PM to help fund the effort. You will receive a cam gear as soon as they are manufactured. The only thing in the way now is the deposit. Cost is a little over $200 each when all is said and done.

Next on the list of stuff is that I'm pretty sure I'm making it my goal to purchase an E39 M5 sometime this year. Might slow down the Audi a little, but rest assured getting it running is my first priority this summer.

These things are expensive! But most normal people wont spend that kind of money on stock wheels right off the bat, unless you are just one of those Dubbers who loves to show out.


I tried to sell them to a guy in my car group. He always acts like hes so cool but his wheels are over played so i suggested he get the lambo wheels.


That fell through, cause then he was like i cant justify spending 2500 bucks on some wheels. But he can totally justify spending over 10,000 dollars on the airride, wheels and paint. Engine is still blah.


the point is that the wheels are beautiful, but are not as easy to sell as one may think.
