Prime that piece before you hook up spark plugs or anything else. Integrated has a pretty cool article for the guy starting for the first time.

Thanks for that link Hank. I was given some honey do's and it doesn't look like it will happen today. Still need to run to the hardware store and pick up the coolant, Ps fluid and get the engine ground on. Don't want to rush it and do a better check of everything. Video camera is ready though.

I'll be stopping at O'Reilly's on the way home to pick up PS fluid, coolant and some odds and ends. It "should" be happening tonight pending the approving nod from the Mrs.

I didn't have a lot of time tonight, but I topped off all the fluids, turned the key to prime and nothing. Checked the battery and saw that I forgot to hook the positive back up. LOL'ed at myself and turned the key for a few times at 10 seconds or so and checked the fuel lines. One small leak that was fixed with a quick tightening. Hook the injectors up, crossed my fingers and turned the key. It cranked great but wouldn't fire so I redid my engine ground and tried again. Nothing. Hmmmmm, at TDC don't I have to check the secondary signal that my VEMS receives from the distributor hall?? Quick call to Hank says yes. So that needs to be clocked. Will do it tomorrow.....it's late.

Distributor Hall timing question! My VEMS uses the distributor hall as the secondary trigger therefore it needs to be timed, but I have the block off plate and not the cap. So how do I time this thing?

Here is the shot of mine with the engine and flywheel at TDC. The timing line is at 12 o'clock.

Image

Here is picture of what I believe it a 3b distributor set for TDC, which has the line at 9 o'clock (you can barely see it) and aligned with the mark on the side of the distributor.

Image

I don't have that reference point on my distributor as you can see so I'm not sure how to line this thing up. Any suggestions?

I replied via email as well, but here it is for the archives:

pull the reference sensors off the side of the block (the two allen head bolts). Rotate the engine until you see the reference pin centered in the hole for the sensor that reads off the back of the flywheel. Then, align the distributor so that the shutter wheel on the distributor is lined up with the hall sensor unit on the side of it.

this isn't any different from the stock procedure, its just that all vems really cares about is that the hall trigger and the reference pin signals overlap. so if you dont have the rotor anymore thats an easy way to do it.

Sorry to sound ignorant, but when you refer to the shutter wheel, you are saying align that reference line that is current at 12 (in my picture) with the hall sender unit that is at 3 o'clock in my picture.

Good to note that TDC is not the same as the pin at the VR.

So how accurate does it have to be? Just simply pointing to the middle of the hall sender unit?

Yeah, you want the window centered over the hall when the pin is at the VR.

Which looks like this (the window is not centered at the hash mark):

Is it possible that my hall is on the other side by the connector since you can't see that in my picture? Or maybe it's the dark spot at 9 o'clock and the picture doesn't show it well??

In your pic the hall and window are at about 9 o'clock. Lineing up the marks at TDC should line up the window with the hall when the pin is at the VR.

You are confusing me. The hall is probably at 9, but isn't the window currently at about 1 or 2 in my picture?

Yes, in your picture. He was probably referring to the second picture you posted.
