Tim's '86 BLAZE 4kq EPIC PROGESS!!!!

Postby my2000apb » Wed May 05, 2010 11:56 am

I purchased this 4kq from a member here, CooterIFY, and my friend, Toph, who will be registering here soon too, bought his 200 10vt as part of a package deal. He was being deployed and would be unable to store the cars, so we will be takign over where he left off, in the preservation and modification of the cars!!!

it has about 175k miles, there is a bit of surface rust, and several small dents and plenty of minor dings. although all my windows work, the sunroof works and closes/opens swiftly, Both power windows work! te interior is UBER clean, i may end up swapping the dash to my T-red car ahaha, it also has an almost fully functional trip computer.

the car was originally zermatt, but was sprayed over with some zermattish, but much lower quaility paint.
the gas gauge doesnt work, prob jsut the level sender
a/c doesnt work but all the parts are there
also cruise control doesnt work but the parts are all there aswell

as i already have a minty clean summer only 4kq, so this ones getting comissioned to year round duty, ill remove the a/c most likely, eventually itll be converted to a 16vT, as to lighten up the front of the car a lot, and maybe even a front mount radiator!!!

this car wil be primarily for all over beater use, and major winter use!!! i need to find a large packasport roofbox, and this thing with locked diff;s will be a truly unstoppable snow/ski trip mobile!!!

WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!

yes and the color has changed, the oversprayed Zermatt is out, and a better color for a snowbound mega ski trip car is partially on the car and only getting better looking!!

ok light body work round one

so there were some minor dings and dents, although im really not too worried as this car will be mostly a winter /snow / ski day/ occasional parts runner car. I really just wanted to get some fresh color and seal up the body panels a bit as some past repairs had started peeling etc.

the PO had also removed the door trim so i had to go ahead and finish the job by removing the rest of the adhesive.

the battery tray was also pretty rusty so i cleaned that up and hit it with some paint. and i had a broken tailight, thanks Jim, glibobbo21, for the replacement.

Not as far as I know, unless you sourced a European Typ 81/5 80 quattro GTE gearbox (any post-facelift Typ 85 Audi 80 quattro *should* be a 4 cylinder, though the first 80 quattros, according to wikipedia.de/kaleu-koch.de, were 5 cylinders), but then you would still have an 016 (I'm not sure whether that matters to you). I don't believe that there are any center-locking differential 01E gearboxes.

Frank, an 016 would still be a fine gearbox for the application, im only planning on running 200-225 whp out of the 16vT. even turning up the wick a bit, the trans should def be able to handle it, itd never see over 300 whp, as itll be a winter / snow /ski trip beast etc, not a daily, not a tracker, a four wheeled snowmobile if you may hahaah

how cars were made with the trans im looking for?

No clue... I would assume a decent amount, but I have no clue about GTE quattro production figures in Europe.

Locker ftw.

so in theory i can source a 016 4 cyl locker trans from europe, then its a 4.55 box so id need a 4.55 rear diff as well.

but, would that be such a short ratio it would suck? im looking to make this an 80% winter/snow car and occasional parts runner so summer / dry drivability is not a top priority.

id really liek to have both lockers, but i think i may use my urS o1e and have torsen center and locker rear as it will cost me a lot less, and i can keep my rear diff as the o1e is a 4.11 like the oem rear

how under vs over steery is the torsen center and locker rear?

im on a friends computer, as soon as i get mine online again, pics galore!!!!

fwiw itll be studded snows all winter

bimmerboy wrote:Locker ftw.

any idea how to do this for center and rear w/o a 4.55 uber short ratio european gear box?

or should i just weld the center diff and have the rear so i can turn it off and on hahhahahaha

leaning towards turbo 16v/ ABA , urS o1e, 4kq locker rear diff.

Um well you can stay 5 cylinder. or Weld up an 01a. If you are really only going to use it in the winter, it wouldn't be too big of a hassle

ill be going O1E with the un welded torsen center, yeah itll prob see some dry road duty for parts runs etc, i think mega burly studded snows will help more than a locked center, and ill still have a rear locker

Haha sweet color man!.. If you're worried about the torsen center and getting stuck in the snow i have a trick for you. Lock the rear then gently apply pressure to the brake while trying to pull away. If you have one wheel spinning free you won't go anywhere. Applying the brake helps send torque to the non slipping wheels. At least thats how it was explained to me. I've never gotten stuck using that method. I've drove my avant into snow so deep the doors drug when i opened it. Stopped, then pulled right out no problem.

Though a locker is nice...

yeah id really love a center locker, but its not toooo feasible at this point, money wise, and the fact that i can put this together with almost all partss that i have.

eventually ill jsut weld the o1e in the center hahaa

I was able to stop by audidubs to pick up a 16v motor for mockup into my 4kq, ill be using the head and bolting it to an ABA bottom end down the road.

today i got a chance to start stripping it down and cleaning it up
i will also be using a used custom IM from a friends previous 16v project, ill just need to put and endcap, vac bungs and a throttle body flange on it

for exhaust manifold ill be cutting the fifth runner off of a 3b manifold. fitment is perfect and allows me to use the nice audi factory wastegate.

the clutch had felt pretty soft in the short time ive driven it, so upon digging into it i realized the firewall is cracked about 2" across just above the master cylinder, so jim to the rescue again, with a firewall brace. its a lot better but the clutch does like to come right back up, we think the slave cylinder is on its way out

so we went down the road and blew a few donuts ahah
