Dan's '93 UrS4

Postby ringbearer » Sat Mar 09, 2013 10:37 pm

I got this car in December 2009, I had another '93 S4 that I sold and missed so the only way to fix it was to get another better one. I found it in Bellingham Washington, scraped the funds together and flew up from CA with a friend to check it out and drive it home. It had more issues than I liked but it was Rs2'd (mostly lol), had a CGR 6 speed, 034 HO coils, Euro bumpers, 18" CH's and looked very clean.

The paint job isn't great, not horrible but I'm picky, interior was dirty, headliner was just starting to sag and it had a miss on boost... I had been looking for some time and felt like I could fix all the issues so I went for it. Drove home without a hitch and started working the bugs out.the big pig

Fast forward to now and I've done lots of work to it and have way more planned, I love the big pig :)

Thanks, Ben!

Carlisle is the wrong side or the country, trying for BBQ and a Tahoe weekend that is yet to be announced.

Simple and clean was the goal, I like understated.

Beautiful car Dan!

Anxious to see how the JHM synchro kit works for you.

Thanks, Hank

I should have my tig up and running by the end of next week, then I can fab the downpipe and go get a tune.
The tig setup was a chunk of change, I had to sell a few Audi parts before I could swing it.
But I got a new Miller Synchrowave 200 from Cyberweld with all the fixins. I have no gear, everything I've used in the past was at the shop I worked at, so I needed everything!

The welder will show up on Monday, a buddy is coming by Monday to help me wire the garage for it and the rest of my gear and tanks should be here this Friday. Then I'll dive in :D

Thanks Nick, I won't be getting the trans done anytime soon, I've got to save up for it and I'm going to do the bottom end at the same time so it will really be expensive ;)

I'm moving as soon as I find a new house so that will put me back and I'm sure I'll be spending money setting up the garage too, hope it is bigger!

Super clean under the hood. What fuel rail is that and Is that clear hose for a breather hose?

Thanks

That is a stock S6 AAN fuel rail that was modded by Mance, I polished it too.

I put the clear breather hose on so i could see oil residue inside of it easily, there was none, I need to switch back.

I like the clear hose if it could hold up to the heat and oil.

Well the hose is cheap and easy to replace, it's not suited to long term underhood use. But it came on a 20' roll so I have plenty left...

Re: Dan's '93 UrS4 Dyno update

Postby ringbearer » Thu Jun 27, 2013 10:36 pm

Put my Stock bottom ended and intercooled car on the rollers at 034 to have Nate work his magic with the GTX3071 and RipChip.

Came out good for a new conservative dyno. I'm happy with how it feels for now, big improvement over Rs2 with a higher powerband, can't wait to get the rsst of the supporting mods in place. I'll prob spray some meth before I do bigger IC due to the Euro bumper.

Big thanks to 034 for getting me in and out in a timely manner and writing a solid safe tune. I'm lucky to be only 100 miles north :)

We tuned the car this way because that was what was deemed safe for this particular vehicle on this particular dyno being tested in these particular conditions. Dan wanted a safe tune so he could drive the car hard without worrying about having too little/much fuel.

We think the inter-cooler is a bottle-neck on this setup and that is part of the reason for the lower than "expected" numbers. Also, this is the first UrS-car to be tested on this dyno and as everyone knows, Mustang dynos are known as the "heart-breaker" dynos for a reason.

There is no reason to have the fuel curve look like that. If you are limited by detonation at that point, pull timing. Boost is also poorly tuned... peak boost/tq @ 6k rpms on a GTX3071? Should be closer to 4500 @ 24psi. I assume you have full control over the boost control solenoid with the RIP chip.

I don't think anybody is scoffing at the WHP numbers at all, as Mustangs can be brutal... I think the problem expressed is the AFR and how it relates to the power curve. I did a little graphic that shows how closely the power mirrors the afr curve. The AFR is a little laggy to the power curves, but I imagine the sniffer is out back on the tail pipe, which explains the lag in response time.

Interesting to say the least.

I take back the 9.5:1, if you notice the quick stats at the bottom it states AFR minimum as 11.4:1 meaning the afr graph isn't following either scale on the left or right. Still a bit ripply but its easy to rationalize an 11.4:1 afr to keep detonation at bay. 9.5, not so much.
